Home Security Checklist Before Going on Vacation

Leaving home for a vacation should not mean spending the trip wondering whether you locked every door, closed every window, or left an obvious sign that nobody is home. A little preparation before departure can reduce those concerns and make the property less inviting to unwanted entry. 

A good vacation home security plan combines physical security with simple habits. Strong locks matter, but so do lighting, mail, deliveries, spare-key control, alarm settings, and what you share publicly before and during the trip. 

The best time to find a weak lock or poorly secured window is several days before you leave, not while you are already on the way to the airport. 

Start With Every Exterior Door 

Exterior doors should be the first part of the house you inspect because they are the main controlled entry points. 

Do not limit the check to the front entrance. Side doors, rear doors, basement entrances, garage access doors, patio doors, and secondary entrances all need the same attention. 

Check Each Door for Four Things 

• The door closes fully without needing to be pushed or lifted. 

• The latch enters the strike correctly. 

• The deadbolt extends fully when locked. 

• The frame and strike area do not feel loose. 

A good lock cannot perform properly if the door itself is out of alignment. If the latch barely reaches the strike or the deadbolt rubs against the frame, the opening should be corrected before you depend on it while the house is vacant. 

Test the Deadbolts Instead of Assuming They Work 

Homeowners often lock the same door every day without noticing that the hardware has become loose or difficult to operate. 

Turn each deadbolt from the inside and test it with the key from outside where applicable. The bolt should move without excessive resistance and extend completely into the strike. 

Watch for Problems Such As: 

• A key that sticks 

• A lock cylinder that feels loose 

• A thumb turn that requires force 

• A bolt that does not extend completely 

• Loose screws around the lock 

• A door that must be pulled into position before locking 

These problems may seem minor during normal use because you can adjust the door by hand. They become more important when nobody is home to notice that the door was not secured correctly. 

Check Door Frames and Strike Plates Too 

Home security is not only about the lock cylinder. 

The deadbolt connects the door to the frame through the strike plate. If that part of the opening is loose, damaged, or poorly aligned, installing a better lock alone may not solve the problem. 

Inspect the screws, frame, and wood around the strike. Look for cracking, movement, or previous damage. 

If a door has been forced, repaired, or repeatedly slammed in the past, examine the frame closely before leaving for an extended period. 

Secure Sliding Doors Before Your Vacation 

Sliding patio doors need their own security check. 

Make sure the existing latch locks correctly and that the door cannot simply be lifted or moved out of position because of worn rollers or excessive movement in the track. 

A properly fitted secondary security bar or other suitable device can add another layer of protection where appropriate. 

The important point is to test the complete opening rather than assuming the factory latch is still working as it did when the door was installed. 

Windows Need More Than a Quick Visual Check 

A closed window is not necessarily a locked window. 

Walk through the house and operate every accessible window lock before leaving. Ground-floor windows deserve attention, but so do windows near decks, porches, fire escapes, roofs, garages, or other areas that may make them easier to reach. 

Add These Windows to Your Final Check 

• Basement windows 

• Bathroom windows 

• Kitchen windows 

• Windows near air-conditioning units 

• Garage windows 

• Rear-facing windows 

• Windows beside fire escapes or balconies 

• Small windows that are normally left open for ventilation 

A window that does not close completely should be repaired rather than forced into position and assumed secure. 

Do Not Leave Spare Keys in Predictable Places 

A spare key is useful only if the right person can access it. 

Leaving one under a mat, planter, decorative object, or another obvious location makes the home’s lock less meaningful. 

Before traveling, account for every spare key. 

Better Options Include 

• Giving a key directly to someone you trust 

• Using an appropriate secured key-storage system 

• Removing old hidden keys around the property 

• Rekeying locks if you cannot account for previously issued keys 

If contractors, former occupants, dog walkers, cleaners, tenants, or other people have had copies in the past, consider whether the current key control still makes sense. 

Rekeying Can Make Sense Before a Long Trip 

You do not always need completely new locks because several people once had keys. 

Rekeying changes the internal keying of a compatible lock so old keys no longer operate it. This can be useful when you are unsure how many copies of the current key exist. 

Situations that may justify reviewing the keying include: 

• Recently moving into the home 

• Losing a key 

• Ending access for a contractor or service provider 

• Giving out several copies over the years 

• Not knowing who still has an old spare 

• A previous tenant or occupant having had access 

If the locks are also worn, damaged, or outdated, replacement may make more sense than rekeying alone. 

Test the Alarm Before the Day You Leave 

If your home has an alarm system, do not wait until departure morning to find out whether a sensor, battery, app, or entry code is causing trouble. 

Test the system several days ahead. 

Review These Alarm Details 

1. Confirm door and window sensors are responding. 

1. Check whether the control panel reports any faults. 

1. Replace low batteries where required. 

1. Confirm monitoring or notification settings. 

1. Verify the contact numbers connected with alerts. 

1. Make sure the person watching the house knows what to do if an alarm occurs. 

Avoid giving alarm codes to more people than necessary. 

If temporary access is needed, use a separate code where the system allows it rather than sharing the primary household code.

Check Smart Locks and Connected Security Devices 

Smart locks, cameras, video doorbells, and connected alarm systems can help you check the property while away, but they also depend on electricity, batteries, internet access, apps, and account security. 

Before leaving, confirm that devices are online and functioning. 

For Connected Security Devices 

• Charge or replace batteries. 

• Install needed software updates before the trip. 

• Check camera views. 

• Confirm notifications reach the correct phone. 

• Review who has access to the account. 

• Remove access that is no longer needed. 

• Use strong account credentials. 

The FBI recommends using strong, distinct passphrases for online accounts and enabling multifactor authentication where available. 

For security apps connected to cameras, smart locks, or alarms, protecting the account is part of protecting the device. 

Make the House Look Occupied Without Creating Safety Problems 

A house that remains completely dark every evening for two weeks can look different from one following a normal pattern. 

Timers or smart lighting can help create a more typical schedule. 

Avoid leaving every light switched on continuously. That can waste electricity and may look less natural than lights turning on and off at reasonable times. 

Useful Lighting Areas Include 

• A living room 

• An upstairs room 

• Exterior entry lighting 

• Side or rear access areas 

• Driveway or pathway lighting where appropriate 

Exterior lights can also improve visibility around doors, gates, and walkways. 

Check bulbs before you leave so you do not discover through a camera feed that an important exterior light stopped working on the first night. 

Stop Mail From Advertising That Nobody Is Home 

An overflowing mailbox is one of the most obvious signs that a household has been away. 

If nobody will collect your mail, arrange to pause delivery. 

USPS Hold Mail service can hold mail at the local Post Office for a minimum of 3 days and a maximum of 30 days. Requests can be made online for eligible addresses, and the accumulated mail can be delivered after the hold or collected from the Post Office.  

If the vacation lasts longer, review other USPS options rather than allowing mail to accumulate at the house. 

Package Deliveries Need a Plan Too 

Stopping letters does not automatically solve the package problem. 

Review expected orders before departure and avoid scheduling unnecessary deliveries while the property is empty. 

For packages already in transit, check what delivery-management or pickup options the carrier provides. USPS, for example, offers Hold for Pickup for eligible shipments under certain conditions. 

You can also ask a trusted person to collect expected packages promptly. 

The goal is to avoid boxes remaining outside the home for several days. 

Ask Someone You Trust to Check the Property 

Technology can show you a camera view, but it cannot deal with every problem. 

A trusted friend, relative, neighbor, or property caretaker can notice issues that an app may miss, such as a damaged door, fallen branch, water leak, broken exterior light, or unexpected delivery. 

Give the Person Clear Instructions 

Tell them: 

• Which door to use 

• Which key or code is theirs 

• How the alarm works 

• Whether they should bring in mail or packages 

• What rooms they need to check 

• How often you want the property visited 

• How to contact you if something appears wrong 

Do not distribute several spare keys simply because you are traveling. One accountable person is usually easier to manage than several people with overlapping access. 

Do Not Publicize the Empty House Before You Leave 

Vacation posts can unintentionally announce that the property is vacant. 

This is especially relevant when a public social media account identifies where you live or when travel posts clearly show that the entire household is away. 

You can still take photos and share the trip. Consider posting them after returning rather than providing a live schedule of when the home is empty. 

Also review automatic location sharing with apps and accounts before departure. 

Physical locks protect the property itself. Information control helps avoid telling unnecessary people when those locks are unattended. 

Secure Garage Doors and Interior Garage Access 

The garage often contains two separate security concerns: the exterior garage door and the door connecting the garage to the house. 

Test both. 

The connecting door should close and latch correctly, and its lock should operate without problems. If the garage has windows, include them in the same check as the rest of the house. 

For connected garage-door systems, verify app access and alerts before leaving. 

Do not leave garage remotes in vehicles that will remain parked outside unless you have considered what access they could provide if the vehicle were entered. 

Lock Gates, Sheds and Secondary Structures 

Vacation security should extend beyond the main house. 

Sheds, detached garages, storage areas, and side gates may contain tools or equipment and can sometimes provide access to the rear of the property. 

Check: 

• Gate latches and locks 

• Shed locks 

• Detached garage doors 

• Storage cabinets 

• Bicycles and outdoor equipment 

• Ladders left outside 

A ladder stored beside the home can also create access to upper windows that would otherwise be harder to reach. 

Move tools and equipment into secured areas where practical. 

Avoid Hiding Security Problems With Temporary Fixes 

Travel preparation sometimes reveals a lock or door problem at the worst possible time. 

A deadbolt may stop lining up. A patio door may not latch. A key may begin sticking. A window lock may break. 

Do not rely on a rushed temporary fix if the opening is part of the home’s main security. 

Repair Before Leaving If: 

• An exterior door cannot lock completely. 

• A key may break inside the cylinder. 

• A lock is loose. 

• A strike plate is damaged. 

• A window does not latch. 

• A sliding door will not secure. 

• A door has recently been forced or damaged. 

Addressing these problems early gives you time to test the repair before the home is left unattended. 

Your Final Vacation Home Security Checklist 

Do one last walkthrough shortly before departure. 

Exterior Doors 

• Front door is locked. 

• Rear and side doors are locked. 

• Deadbolts extend fully. 

• Patio or sliding doors are secured. 

• Basement and garage access doors are locked. 

Windows 

• Ground-floor windows are closed and locked. 

• Basement windows are secure. 

• Upper windows near accessible roofs or balconies are checked. 

• Bathroom and small secondary windows are closed. 

Keys and Access 

• Hidden spare keys have been removed. 

• The trusted property checker has the correct key or code. 

• Unneeded temporary access has been removed. 

Security Systems 

• Alarm is armed correctly. 

• Cameras and smart locks are online. 

• Device batteries are charged. 

• Security account notifications are working. 

• Multifactor authentication is enabled where available. 

Outside the Home 

• Mail is held or collected. 

• Package deliveries are managed. 

• Gates and sheds are locked. 

• Exterior lighting works. 

• Ladders and valuable outdoor equipment are stored. 

Before You Leave 

• Someone trusted knows you are away. 

• Travel plans are not being publicly broadcast. 

• Every exterior entry received a final physical check. 

Taking five extra minutes for this final inspection is easier than trying to remember from several states away whether the patio door was actually locked. 

Fix Weak Locks Before Your Vacation Starts 

Good vacation home security depends on several small precautions working together. Locked windows, controlled spare keys, working alarms, managed deliveries, and timed lighting all help, but exterior doors and locks remain the physical barrier protecting the house while it is empty.
